{"id":1177,"date":"2026-03-10T12:56:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/?p=1177"},"modified":"2026-03-10T12:56:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T19:56:11","slug":"10000-sq-ft-mansion-lutron-lighting-upgraded-to-crestron","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/?p=1177","title":{"rendered":"10,000-sq-ft Mansion: Lutron Lighting Upgraded to Crestron"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/4e003e190cab6fa-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1736\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Lutron HomeWorks Illumination system<\/strong>, installed in 2002 (an older-generation Lutron platform), had stopped functioning.<br>This legacy system is fundamentally different from modern Lutron platforms such as <strong>HomeWorks QS \/ QSX or the RadioRA series<\/strong> in terms of hardware architecture, programming tools, and integration methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It relies on <strong>outdated protocols and legacy programming software<\/strong>, and Lutron no longer supports direct integration with modern control systems in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After multiple discussions with the homeowner, and considering the need to control additional systems \u2014 including the <strong>fireplace, garage doors, vehicle gate, window shades, background music, and home theater<\/strong> \u2014 we decided on a practical solution:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep the existing Lutron panel enclosure, but replace all Lutron lighting modules with Crestron lighting modules.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Lighting Circuit Wiring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>(<strong>All existing circuits were 100% reusable<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lighting load wiring (Line \/ Load \/ Neutral \/ Ground)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reason:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 The Lutron Illumination system uses a <strong>centralized lighting panel architecture<\/strong><br>\u2022 Crestron <strong>DIN-rail \/ panel lighting systems are also centralized<\/strong><br>\u2022 Both systems operate on:<br>\u2022 <strong>120V AC standard lighting circuits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, the existing wiring could be <strong>directly transferred from the Lutron modules to the Crestron modules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Keypad Wiring (Cresnet Bus)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This was initially the biggest concern when discussing the system upgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After testing, we confirmed that the existing <strong>Lutron keypad wiring used 18\/4 cable<\/strong>.<br>Although it was <strong>not twisted pair<\/strong>, the cable was <strong>fully shielded<\/strong>, which made it <strong>fully compatible with Crestron Cresnet communication<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implementation Result<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Without altering the original wiring infrastructure, we successfully <strong>upgraded the entire lighting system by replacing the Lutron modules with Crestron lighting modules<\/strong>, while installing new <strong>Crestron keypads using the Cresnet bus architecture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All existing wiring was fully reused, minimizing construction disruption and reducing upgrade costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within just <strong>one week<\/strong>, the entire home lighting system was seamlessly transitioned to the <strong>Crestron platform<\/strong>.<br>Control logic, scene integration, and system stability were all significantly improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final result is a <strong>professional-grade lighting control system<\/strong> that is fast, intuitive, and fully unified under the Crestron ecosystem \u2014 efficient, stable, and cleanly executed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">After the upgrade<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire system can now be controlled via:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Touchscreen panels<\/strong><br>\u2022 <strong>Smartphones<\/strong><br>\u2022 <strong>iPads<\/strong><br>\u2022 <strong>Local or remote access<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And importantly \u2014 <strong>no annual subscription fees are required.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/c2b7fd567d08379-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1735\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/5c7f5277a0908cd-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1734\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/f63bb4612580b49-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1733\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/7793302df904a57.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1732\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/f8d00a86ec12564.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1731\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.westai.ca\/cn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/eed0920980aa105-1024x522.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1730\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.9617574076777113;width:722px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lutron HomeWorks Illumination system, installed in 2002 (an older-generation Lutron platform), had stopped functioning.This legacy system is fundamentally different from modern Lutron platforms such as HomeWorks QS \/ QSX or the RadioRA series in terms of hardware architecture, programming tools, and integration methods.
